Happy Halloween! Forget ghosts and goblins. The scariest things in business are the ones you can’t see, like the problems quietly lurking on your website, scaring customers away while you’re busy doing real work. Here are six of the spookiest, and how to banish them.

The ghost form

Your contact form looks fine, but it stopped sending messages weeks ago. Inquiries vanish into thin air and you never know. The fix: test your form regularly by sending yourself a message.

The zombie page

Old pages for services you no longer offer, prices from three years ago, and holiday hours from last December keep shambling along. The fix: review your content and remove or update anything out of date.

The haunted loading screen

Your site takes forever to load, and visitors vanish before they see a thing. The fix: compress images and keep your site lean. See why websites slow down.

The skeleton in the closet

An outdated site with years-old software is a favorite target for hackers. The fix: keep everything updated and backed up. Our guide to website security basics explains how.

The invisible phone number

Customers are ready to call but can’t find your number, or it’s not tappable on a phone. The fix: put a click-to-call button at the top of every page.

The vampire site

It looks like it was designed in 2012 and quietly drains trust from everyone who visits. The fix: a modern, mobile-friendly design. Not sure if yours qualifies? Check five signs you need a new website.
