Website Contact Forms: How to Stop Losing Leads
For many small businesses, the contact form is where a visitor turns into a lead. That’s why a bad one hurts so much. Too many fields, a confusing layout, or a form that quietly stops working can cost you customers you’ll never know you lost. Here’s how to build a contact form that actually gets used.
Keep it short
Every extra field is another reason to give up. For most local businesses, three or four is plenty: name, phone or email, and a short message about what they need. You can collect the details later, once you’re in touch.
Make it clear and friendly
- Label every field plainly: no guessing what goes where.
- Use a clear button: “Request a Free Quote” beats a generic “Submit.”
- Set expectations: “We’ll reply within one business day” builds confidence.
- Offer a phone option: some people would simply rather call.
Make it work on a phone
Most visitors will fill it out with their thumbs. Fields should be big enough to tap, the keyboard should match the input (number pad for phone numbers), and nothing should require pinching or zooming. See our post on mobile-first design for more.
Test it, then test it again
This is the step most people skip, and it’s the most important. A form can break after a software update and keep looking perfectly normal. Test it regularly:
- Submit a message yourself and confirm it arrives in your inbox.
- Check your spam folder: notifications sometimes land there.
- Confirm the visitor sees a thank-you message so they know it worked.
Respond quickly
The first business to reply often wins the job. Set up notifications so new inquiries reach your phone right away. Pair your form with a click-to-call button so customers can pick whichever way suits them.
We monitor this for you. Checking that forms work is part of our maintenance plans. Your website design and build is FREE with any Maintenance & Growth plan. You pay nothing until your site is live, with no long-term contract. Your first payment covers only the first month of your plan plus one year of website hosting and one year of your domain.
